Here's what's coming to Netflix in February 2023

June 2024 · 11 minute read

As a non-practicing romantic, I'll skip the traditional Valentine's Day introduction to February (and rightly or not, avoid including "Your Place or Mine" with Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher in my selections for the month) and simply acknowledge that Netflix will be bringing dozens of new titles to their streaming service in February.

Here's Netflix's sizzle reel featuring their top choices for the month:

And here are four titles that caught my eye:

Make My Day

Netflix Synopsis: Yasuo Ohtagaki, the acclaimed manga author known for his sci-fi spectacles Moonlight Mile and Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt, has created an original story for a must-see sci-fi epic that brings together talent both from Japan and abroad. Shoji Kawamori, known for designing well-known mechs including those in the Macross series, and Kiyotaka Oshiyama, designer of the demons in Devilman Crybaby, lend their talents to the mech designs. The snowy, ice-covered planet Coldfoot is home to a precious energy-rich ore called “sig.” On the surface, the planet seems to be a crime-free utopia, but in reality prisoners are used for back-breaking sig mining. Jim, a young prison guard, rushes to the site of a sudden mining accident to find a mysterious creature attacking the humans. (Available February 2, 2023)

The Exchange

Netflix Synopsis: Inspired by real events, two women set out to pioneer the cutthroat stock market of 1980s Kuwait — and disrupt its corrupt boys club along the way. (Available February 8, 2023)

African Queens: Njinga

Netflix Synopsis: From Executive Producer Jada Pinkett Smith comes a new documentary series exploring the lives of prominent and iconic African Queens. The first season will cover the life of Njinga, the complex, captivating, and fearless 17th century warrior queen of Ndongo and Matamba, in modern day Angola. The nation’s first female ruler, Njinga earned a reputation for her blend of political and diplomatic skill with military prowess and became an icon of resistance. (Available February 15, 2023)

The Law According to Lidia Poët

Netflix Synopsis: Turin, late 1800s. A ruling by the Turin Court of Appeals declares Lidia Poët's admission to the bar association unlawful, thus preventing her from practicing law simply because she is a woman. Penniless but full of pride, Lidia secures a job at her brother Enrico's law firm while she prepares an appeal to overturn the court ruling. In an approach that’s ahead of its time, Lidia assists criminal suspects by searching for the truth behind outward appearances and preconceptions. Lidia’s brother-in-law, Jacopo, a mysterious journalist, passes her information and introduces her to the hidden worlds that lurk beneath a flamboyant Turin. The series is a light procedural drama, reinterpreting the true story of Lidia Poët, Italy's first female lawyer.
