Hookies Fire Company hosting 'Bucks For Buck' to help injured firefighter

TYRONE -- Fire departments often become a tight-knit family.

That's the same for the Hookies Fire Company in Blair County.

The department is coming together to help a firefighter injured in a car accident several years ago.

"It means a lot. I actually spent majority of my childhood and my teenage years here," says Jonathon Moyer, volunteer firefighter and son of Brian "Buck" Moyer.

Buck was injured in an accident years ago and in that time it's been surgery after surgery.

"He's one of those people that's always been there for the community and he's always helped us with our fundraisers," reflects Deputy Fire Chief Harry Dillon. "He's always the first person to be here when the alarm sounds."

Dillon says Buck served at the department for 20 years. The accident he was involved in stopped him from working as well as volunteer firefighting.

"The car rolled over on its side and his foot was trapped under the brake pedal," Dillon tells 6 News.

The accident caused his ankle to break in several places. Doctors have fought to correct the problems he has as a result but recently decided the best option for Buck was to amputate just below the knee.

"He's been hanging in there. He's always been very strong and I've always looked up to him," says his son Jonathon.

Dillon and Moyer both say Buck was set to get fitted for a prosthetic limb on Tuesday. The fire company is hosting a fundraiser in order to help with those medical costs.

"Usually when someone is down, we'll stand behind them and help pick them up," Dillon adds.

The fundraiser is Saturday, May 28, at 9 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. at Hookies Fire Company on Blair Avenue in Tyrone and it's $5 to attend. All proceeds will go toward medical expenses.

Dillon hopes this helps Buck, who wants to come back to active duty firefighting and do something he's always wanted to do.

"Once he gets fitted and cleared by the doctor, I know he'd like to come back and make some calls and run some calls with his son."

"All I can say is me and him will have the biggest smiles on our faces when we get in that truck together," says Johnathon. "It's going to be a real great moment."
