Johnstown moves closer to adopting new city banner

Many topics were discussed during this month’s Johnstown City Council meeting including a motion to adopt a new city commemorative banner.

The design for a new Johnstown commemorative banner was also voted on during the meeting after nearly 40 submissions were already narrowed down to two by city residents.

“And then it was the top two which were by Jackson Dewitt and Joan Gonkivic,” Tasha Adama, director of You in Flood City explained. “Green represents the hills, trails and outdoor recreation in Johnstown, the blue representing the rivers and water recreation. I went with three arches for the three major floods and the three rivers -- Stonycreek, Conemaugh and the Little Conemaugh. And the arches make up the Stone Bridge which is a major landmark of Johnstown.

Adams spoke on behalf of the new banner she was hoping the new design would replace the lesser known city flag, but the City Council had a different plan.

“It could be a commemorative flag or a commemorative banner, whatever title we give it, it will not be replacing the city flag itself,” Johnstown Mayor Frank Janakovic said.

Either way, both the City Council and You in Flood City think the new banner will benefit the city.

“I think it is something that could benefit the city and I just commend the people who are involved in that,” Janakovic said.
