Clearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — State police and officials with the Clearfield County coroner's office are investigating the death of an inmate at SCI Houtzdale.

According to the prison's Acting Superintendent David Close, 33-year-old Matthew Vanzandt was found unresponsive in his cell on Wednesday, May 11.

Investigators say first responders attempted to perform life-saving measures but he was pronounced dead around 8 p.m.

Officials say Vanzandt was serving a 12-to-24-year sentence for first degree murder out of Lancaster County and had been at SCI Houtzdale since Sept. of last year.

The investigation into Vanzandt's death is ongoing.
