A man arrested in Franklin County last year was allegedly involved in a twenty-two-million dollar gold heist and firearms smuggling ring that police say is the sixth largest heist in the world.

Durante King-Mclean, 25, of Canada was stopped in Chambersburg on September 2, 2023 for allegedly driving the rental car.

According to the United States Attorney's office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania (USAO), Pennsylvania State Police stopped the vehicle in Franklin County after it committed multiple traffic violations.

Troopers discovered firearms in the vehicle, and they say that prompted King-Mclean to flee on foot.

Police obtained a search warrant and found that the car contained 65 firearms that were reportedly on their way to be smuggled into Canada.

Eleven of the firearms were stolen, and one had an "obliterated" serial number, according to the USAO.

The USAO says Prasath Paramalingam, age 34, allegedly "arranged funding" for King-McClean to buy the firearms from Florida, Georgia and other states as King-McClean drove back up to Canada.

Paramalingam was allegedly apart of the conspiracy since April 2023, and helped King-McClean enter the United States illegally.

According to CNN, the case was tied to a multi-million dollar gold heist involving a Canadian airport.

CNN reported Wednesday that on April 17, 2023, a cargo container containing gold bars and foreign currency worth over $22 million in Canadian currency was stolen from a secure storage facility at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

According to CNN, police say the Canadian man pulled over in Fulton County was allegedly part of a crime ring that melted down gold, sold it, and used the profits to purchase the illegal firearms.

Deputy Police Chief Nick Milinovich said the scheme was the largest gold heist in Canada's history and the sixth largest heist in the world, CNN reported.

The heist was also found to involve two airport workers and a variety of other accomplices. CNN reports that six of the suspects have been arrested, and three have warrants out for their arrest.
