'Suspension lifted:' Former Westmont teacher Shawn Miller eligible to teach again in PA

July 2024 · 2 minute read

There is another update on the case of a former Westmont teacher who was accused of raping an elementary student in 2015.

The Department of Education tells 6 News that Shawn Miller is clear to teach again in the state.

As we reported last week, the Cambria County district attorney dismissed the second and only remaining assault charge against Miller.

In May of 2022, Miller was arrested for raping one student and for indecent assault of another.

According to the criminal complaint, he resigned after the district confronted him with between 20 and 30 complaints of inappropriate behavior in 2020.

The Department of Education says Miller’s teaching certification was suspended after his arrest, as per state policy.

It says since the criminal charges were dismissed, the DOE lifted the suspension of his credentials.

A check of his online certification shows his discipline status as “suspension lifted.”

According to the DOE’s website, that status means:

“The terms and/or conditions of the educator’s temporarily terminated Pennsylvania certificate have been satisfied and the educator once again holds a Pennsylvania certificate. Educators with this status are eligible for employment in commonwealth public schools."

District attorney Greg Neugebauer did not directly say why he had to dismiss all the charges against Miller, but in his statement, he talked about how difficult it is for victims to testify in trial.

Neugebauer says he stands ready to prosecute the case if the situation changes.
